Acne Metallic Text

A

cne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Though common, accurate information about acne can be scarce. This can make it difficult to get clearer skin.  A common myth about acne is that you have to let it run its course. That is not true because, acne is a common skin condition that can be treated and effectively so.

Letting acne runs its course is not always the best advice because, without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears, many effective treatments are available and treating acne often boosts a person’s self-esteem.

There are more women getting acne these days. Not just teens have acne. A growing number of women have acne in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. It is not know why this is happening. But it is understandable that adult acne can be particularly frustrating. Adult Acne is now a fact of life for many women, but effective treatments are available and some acne medications are so teratogenic (cause birth defects) that they are not for use during pregnancy.

Acne signs and symptoms

In terms of signs, Acne is not just pimples as many would think. Many different blemishes are associated with acne such as Blackheads, Whiteheads, Pustules. Nodules, Cysts and Papules.

Although Acne commonly appears, it can appear on other areas of the body such as the chest, back, neck, buttocks, shoulders.

In terms of symptoms, Acne can cause more than blemishes. It has been shown that people who have acne can suffer with;

bullet2.pngLow self-esteem: for many of these people with acne their acne makes them feel bad about themselves. Because of their acne, they can be unfriendly and withdrawn. Are absent from school and work. They tend to underperform because of their acne.

bullet2.pngDepression: for many of these people their low self-esteem due to Acne can lead to depression , a clinically significant medical condition.  Depression can lead to suicidal thoughts. Several studies have found that teens who believe that they have “bad” acne were more likely to think about committing suicide than those without ‘bad’ acne.

bullet2.pngDark spots on the skin: These spots appear when the acne heals but it can take months or years for these dark spots to vanish.

bullet2.pngScars (permanent): People who get acne cysts and nodules often see scars when the acne clears. These scars can be prevented. Be aggressive with the  treatment of acne if you get acne early — between 8 and 12 years old. This especially noteworthy if someone in your family had acne cysts and nodules.  If you get acne then aggressive treatment is mandated. Treating acne before cysts and nodules appear can prevent scars.

Causes of Acne

A

cne is the most common skin problem in the United States. About 40 to 50 million Americans have acne at any one time.

Most people who have acne are teenagers or young adults, but acne can occur at any age. Newborn babies can get acne. Men and women get acne and some women get acne when they reach middle age.

Acne appears when a pore in the skin clogs. This clog begins with dead skin cells. Normally, dead skin cells rise to surface of the pore, and the body sheds the cells. When the body starts to make lots of sebum, oil that keeps our skin from drying out, the dead skin cells can stick together inside the pore. Instead of rising to the surface, the cells become trapped inside the pore.

Sometimes bacteria that live on the skin, p. acnes, also get inside the clogged pore. Inside the pore, the bacteria have a perfect environment for multiplying very quickly. With loads of bacteria inside, the pore becomes inflamed it can be red and swollen. If the inflammation goes deep into the skin, an acne cyst or nodule appears.

Acne: Diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose acne, a Medical Professional should first examine your skin to ensure you have acne because there are other skin conditions that can look like acne.  Then the acne is graded. Grade 1 is mild acne. Grade 4 is severe acne.

Treatment Solutions

Today, there are many effective acne treatment solutions. Not every acne treatment works for everyone who has acne. But virtually every case of acne can be controlled with the proper skincare steps and treatment solutions.

Most people have mild acne and have a few blemishes. They may have whiteheads, blackheads, papules, and/or pustules (aka pimples). Mild acne can be treated with product regiments without a prescription such as the BEAUTY CLASSICS® Pharmacist Formulary High Quality Brand of Acne Products Check1red.pngAcneSkinPlex,Check1red.png Aqua Deep Clean™, Check1red.pngAqua Clear™, and Check1red.pngClear Skin Essence™ regiment of products containing benzoyl peroxide and or salicylic acid which most effectively clear the skin. This does not mean that the acne will clear overnight.

Despite the claims, acne treatment does not work overnight. At-home treatment requires 4-8 weeks to see improvement. Once acne clears, you must continue to treat the skin to prevent breakouts.

If you have a lot of acne, cysts, or nodules, a medicine that you can buy without a prescription may not work. In some of these cases of severe acne  you should see a dermatologist for the following types of treatment:

Topical Acne treatment: There are many topical acne treatments. Some topicals help kill the bacteria. Others work on reducing the oil. The topical medicine may contain a retinoid, prescription-strength benzoyl peroxide, antibiotic, or even salicylic acid.

Systemic Acne treatment: Systemic treatments may be necessary when you have red, swollen types of acne. This type of treatment is usually necessary to treat acne cysts and nodules. You may be prescribe one or more of these:

bullet2.pngAntibiotics (helps to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation).

bullet2.pngBirth control pills and other medicine that works on hormones (can be helpful for women).

bullet2.pngIsotretinoin (the only treatment that works on all that causes acne).

Other acne treatment Procedures

  • Lasers and other light therapies: These devices reduce the p. acnes bacteria. Your dermatologist can determine whether this type of treatment can be helpful.
  • Chemical peels: You cannot buy the chemical peels that dermatologists use. Dermatologists use chemical peels to treat 2 types of acne — blackheads and papules.
  • Acne removal: Your dermatologist may perform a procedure called “drainage and extraction” to remove a large acne cyst. This procedure helps when the cyst does not respond to medicine. It also helps ease the pain and the chance that the cyst will leave a scar. If you absolutely have to get rid of a cyst quickly, your dermatologist may inject the cyst with medicine.

Waiting for acne to clear on its own can be frustrating. Without treatment, acne can cause permanent scars, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. To avoid these possible outcomes, it is recommend that people treat acne. When the skin clears, treatment should continue. Treatment prevents new breakouts.

Final Acne Tips; Do’s and Don’ts

bullet1.pngDo not squeeze acne to get rid of it. Acne treatment takes time to work. While you are waiting for treatment to work, it can be tempting to squeeze acne to get rid of it. Squeezing tends to make acne worse. It can even cause a permanent acne scar.  So do not to pick, scratch, pop, or squeeze acne.

  • Do not tan to get rid of acne. Trying to clear your acne by getting a tan may not be as safe as you think. Research shows that people who use tanning beds and sunlamps increase their risk of getting melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, by 75%. Getting a tan from the sun also increases your risk of skin cancer.

Tanning also causes people to see wrinkles, age spots, and other signs of aging much earlier. And many
acne treatments increase the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light. Both the sun and tanning beds emit UV light. If you are using an acne treatment, tanning can cause your skin to become red, sore, and start to peel.

    What should you do instead of tan? Pharmacists and Dermatologists recommend using an acne treatment. There are many effective acne treatments such as AcneSkinPlex™. Always use a recommended Skincare Regiment daily without fail to ensure proper resolution of Acne for a Clearer Skin. By doing this you establish the proper conditions for a beautiful and classic skin. Always follow these steps;
  • Cleanse; most recommended with a mild non-detergent cleanser such as the Aqua Deep Clean™ Cleanser with anti-bacterial properties.
  • Tone; most recommended with a mild non-alcoholic anti-acne toner such as Aqua Clear™ Acne Control Toner that contains Salicylic Acid.
  • Moisturize; most recommended after cleansing and toning and to be applied while your skin is still damp in order to lock in moisture with a quality formulary moisturizer such as Dry Skin Fluid™ or Dry Skin Cream™.
  • Treatment; this is a highly recommended step by applying the direct anti-acne products such as the AcneSkinPlex™ class of products available in different strengths of Benzoyl Peroxide with or without Salicylic Acid and Tretinoin in the different quality Pharmacist Formulary.
  • Clear the Skin; finally when the acne healing process begins, you need to begin the process of clearing away the Blackheads and Dark Skin spots and other Blemishes caused by the acne in order to truly achieve a CLEAR SKIN by applying skin toning and complexion creams or lotions such as CLEAR SKIN ESSENCE™, at least twice a day.
  • Treat your acne and Be gentle to your skin. Scrubbing your skin clean will not clear acne. Scrubbing irritates the skin and tends to make acne worse
